# How to implement a data governance framework for a healthcare organisation or project

The health sector is already advanced in applying good data governance approaches at an ecosystem level. The [World Health Organization data governance maturity model,](https://cdn.who.int/media/docs/default-source/world-health-data-platform/events/health-data-governance-summit/preread-3-who-data-governance-summit_data-governance-of-health-data.pdf?sfvrsn=ffbd4a33_10) which was co-created by global players, considers structural, legal and technical elements as foundations of an ecosystem-level data governance framework. The [Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) Health Data and Information Governance and Capability Framework](https://www.cihi.ca/sites/default/files/document/health-data-info-capability-framework-en.pdf) also provides a model on how to implement a data governance capability framework within a regional or national context. If you are a policy lead, we recommend referring to these materials when considering how to engage across a number of actors.

This play is aimed at those leading projects that involve accessing, using and sharing health data, and focuses on implementation of data governance practices within a project or organisation. We split implementation into four key sections:

1. **Data assets**
2. **People**
3. **Policies and processes**
4. **Standards and technology**
