Activity 8: Define your message and medium

Learn how to define the key message to your audience

Define the key message

As with any communications, it’s important to think about how to reach your audience. You should consider what audience you are trying to communicate with, what form they want to engage in, and the information they expect to see.

Internal comms can be just as important as external, so think about how you will explain the value of the steps you’ve taken to increase your organisation’s trustworthiness to staff, and how it might impact them in the future. Make it clear that this is an ongoing process – not a one-off – and explain how working through the guidebook has changed how you work and how you will keep improving.

Decide the output

As you describe your work with the guidebook, there are two main forms of communication you can present.

  • Summary: A high-level narrative of your journey, what you learned and the outcomes. The summary should be in a format and style which suits a broad audience. It could be a short report, article or press release.

  • Evidence: Documents that give more detail as to how you performed certain steps within the guidebook. This can reinforce what you have included in the summary. For those who want to learn more or do similar work, this can also provide important details.
